Topic 2: Diffusion, Osmosis & Active Transport
Topic 2.1 Diffusion
Diffusion is the the net movement of particles from a region
of a high concentration to a
region of a lower concentration,
that is, down a concentration gradient.
- Particles can be ions or molecules. However, in biology, the term "molecules" is always used.(*or will be stated otherwise)
- Diffusion occur most quickly in gases than in liquids. This is because, gas molecules have more spaces in between them since they are far apart.
- Diffusion in liquids usually involve the solute molecules, and NOT the solvent (usually water) molecules.
- Net movement explains which direction particles have moved.
In cell, diffusion takes place across the cell membrane. This process does not require ENERGY. Thus, called as "PASSIVE TRANSPORT".

Important: Dear all, I purposely removed the link for downloading the HW. I thought of combining the diffusion hw with the osmosis hw. If you have dowloaded the hw already, you can just ignore it. If you have done it already, you can jut pass it up to me. If you haven't done it, then you don't have to do it. Just wait for the new hw to be posted at the index page - download and do that one instead. Sorry for announcing this at the last minute - I keep on forgetting to tell you about this.
