SUB-TOPIC: METABOLISM
Question to ponder: What is metabolism?
- Basically, it is the sum of all the reactions that are carried out in a cell.
Our body carry out all sorts of chemical reactions - continuously! Imagine all these food that you have eaten, have not been processed by your body, what do you think will happen? Even the digestion of food is a chemical reaction! |
Chemical reactions
Chemical reactions can be divided into two. They are:
- Anabolic reaction
- Catabolic reaction
Anabolic ReactionWHAT IS ANABOLIC REACTION?
Anabolic reaction (or anabolism) refers to the formation of complex molecules from simpler molecules.

Catabolic ReactionWHAT IS CATABOLIC REACTION?
Catabolic reaction (or catabolism) refers to the breaking down of complex molecules to simpler molecules.
The energy that is RELEASED from this reaction is used for anabolic reaction. Without this energy, anabolic reaction cannot be carried out by the cell. |

Chemical reactions are catalyzed by ENZYMES
Question to Ponder: What do you mean by catalyzed?
- Catalyze basically means to change or modify, especially, to increase the rate of a reaction.
IMPORTANT: The cell always carry out chemical reactions. However, these reactions usually takes times, therefore, quite slow. In order to increase the speed of the reactions (to make it faster), CATALYST are usually involved. This means that, WITHOUT the CATALYST, chemical reactions can still takes place!
- Catalyst is a substance that can alter (or change) the speed of a reaction - its only purpose is to increase the rate of reaction/speeds up the reaction.
- The shape of the catalyst does not change at the end of a reaction.
